Christmas and New Year are around the corner and, as everyone knows, this is the time when the most cherished dreams come true. This is the best time to meet your better half. Despite different traditions in various cultures, people in many countries love the Christmas and New Year holidays.
In the former Soviet republics the modern traditions of celebrating the New Year started to form as far back as the times of Peter the Great and got their present shape at the beginning of the 20th century. Over this long period of time, traditions of many cultures were mixed together, including the European ones, which are probably the dominant tradition. At present, celebrating the New Year is one of the most eagerly anticipated and most important events of the year. Together with the Russian Orthodox Christmas on January 7, the New Year is one big magical celebration.
Celebrating the New Year on the night of December 31st usually involves a big feast with sparkling wine, warm wishes and presents to friends and family and setting off fireworks. On the New Year’s Eve many children and even some adults are waiting for Grandpa Frost (Santa Claus) and, of course, the celebration starts with decorating a fir-tree, similar to the Christmas tree in Europe and North America.
